Back when I was a foreign exchange student in Spain trying to save a few pesetas (pre-euro days), I followed the recommendation of my host-mother, and went to the local beauty school to get a haircut. I'll never forget the vocabulary lesson I received beforehand as I didn't have a clue as to how to say "bangs", "trim", "layer", etc. in Spanish!! I'm happy to say that my hair and I survived that experience.
Yesterday afternoon, I was wanting to neaten up a bit for the start of my new job and decided to give the beauty school around the corner a whirl. Wasn't quite as brave this time - nails only. I suppose it'd be most economical to do it myself but every once in a while I feel that someone needs to get in there with a cuticle cutter which I just can't seem to do! I was pleased with the results - short wait, nice technician, and only 7 bucks. What does a manicure normally cost out there these days? $10? $15? $20? $25? Just be prepared to sit in a not-so-comfy chair at a table with peeling paint -- but I did get some built-in entertainment watching a newbie lose control of the hair-washing hose when practicing on her mannequin head doll. (really!)
